DR. WILLIAM
H. GOETZMANN:
The Texas Book Festival (TBF) paid tribute to its 2001 TBF Bookend Award
winner, Dr. William H. Goetzmann, for lifetime achievement in literature at
the opening session of the festival. Dr. William H. Goetzmann is the
Jack S. Blanton Sr. Chair of History and American Studies at The University
of Texas at Austin. The award was presented by First Lady Laura Bush at the
House Chamber, State Capitol, Nov. 17, 2001
He has authored or
co-authored twenty books, including, Exploration and Empire , that was
awarded both the Pulitzer and Parkman Prizes, in 1967. Other work of his
include Army Exploration in the American West, winner of the Westerners and
other awards, New Lands, New Men, adopted by the History Book Club, When the
Eagle Screamed, The West of the Imagination co- authored with William N.
Goetzmann Winner of the Carr B. Collins award, of the Texas Institute of
Letters and final nominee for the Pulitzer Prize, The Atlas of North
American Exploration co-authored with professor Gwynne Williams, winner of
the Chicago Geographical society Award, and Sam Chamberlain’s Mexican War (this also won a TIL prize), among many other prize-winning books. Dr. Goetzmann is a member of the American Philosophical Society, The Cosmos
Club, The society of American Historians and membership and life time
Achievement Awards from the Western History Association and the Texas
Institute of Letters. In addition he created The West of the Imagination, a
six part theatrical television series that won the Blue Ribbon Award at the
New York Film Festival. In 1975-76 he served as president of American
Studies Association that met on five continents.
